The Broome-Tioga Special Olympics NY Unified Floorball team has captured a bronze medal in its first tournament of the season. The team consists of four Maine-Endwell students: Ryan Gorski, Leo Hauer, Jaden Bartow and Cam Mosier, along with representatives from Broome-Tioga BOCES and Chenango Valley. Board of Education member Megan Gorski helps lead the team, along with Morgan McBlane and Josh Nickels.
Special Olympics Unified Sports aim to empower individuals with and without intellectual disabilities to engage through the power of athletics, promoting social inclusion through shared training and competition.
Year-round sporting events unite people of all abilities, joining them together on the same team. This event marks one of the first competitions of the winter season.
Thanks to their win, the Broome-Tioga floorball team will now head to the state tournament in Rochester on February 21st. Floorball is a fast-paced, indoor team sport that's played with lightweight sticks and a a plastic ball. It's similar to hockey, but with safer rules and equipment.
In the Spring, the Broome-Tioga Unified Sports team will compete in unified basketball, followed by softball and bocce in the Fall.
