"When kids can believe in themselves and also know they have others to support them, they can do great things!"
Over the past couple of weeks, students in Lindsey Hendricks' class have been taking the time to create a culture of trust and respect for one another, but also themselves. Students read the book, Maybe A Story About the Endless Potential in All of Us, and were asked to pick a word they wanted to commit themselves to this year; a word that would allow them some sort of personal growth.
When the student decided on their word, they also wrote about why they wanted to commit themselves to that growth. Words like "try," "brave," "organized," "healthy," "kind," came out of the project.
Hendricks was gifted the book, Maybe A Story About the Endless Potential in All of Us, and inspired to do this project thanks to some of her former colleagues. After reading it the first time, she says she knew it would be a great piece of literature to get children believing in themselves.
Mrs. Hendricks, a new teacher to Homer Brink, chose the word "patient." She wants to be patient with herself, and allow herself to grow in a new school, while learning from those around her, along with her students.
On Monday, Hendricks ordered washer bracelets and hand stamped each of their words into them. The kids were excited to receive them.
She wants her students to be inspired all year long by their own personal desire to better themselves.
